What I’ve learned from my debut

A panel discussion

Aspiring authors often fantasise about those key ‘I’ve made it’ moments: when you’re offered your first publishing contract, when you see your book on the shelves of a bookshop for the first time, or see your name listed in the bestsellers. But how are you supposed to know what to expect when you actually reach these milestones? How long does the editorial process take? What will your publisher want you to do in terms of publicity and events? And what might your life look like post-publication?

Hear first-hand what the debut publishing experience entails with authors Jumaana Abdu (Translations, published August 2024), Madeleine Cleary (The Butterfly Women, published April 2025), and Angie Faye Martin (Melaleuca, published May 2025). In this one-hour panel discussion, these first-time authors will share what they’ve learned from the process of writing and publishing their books, and what they are doing to sustain a career as a writer.

Jumaana, Madeleine, and Angie will join Kate Adams, the ASA’s Professional Development and Events Manager, in conversation to share:

Join us for this unique opportunity to learn, directly from authors with personal experience, what a debut novelist’s experience of publication can look like and what you could expect from your own publishing experience.

There will be time for questions from the audience.

Who is this for?

Can't make it to the live session?

No problem! Everyone booked in to this event will be emailed a link and passcode to access the recording afterwards. This recording will be available to view for 10 days after the live session. This also means that if you wish to revisit the session after attending it live to take further notes, you can do so!

After 10 days, the link will expire and the recording will no longer be available to view.
