ASA updates Comics rates of pay

The ASA has conducted a review of its minimum rates of pay for comics, following a consultation with creators, and industry organisations that commission, promote, and publish comics. These rates are intended to empower authors and illustrators in their negotiations with commissioners, and are provided as a framework for both commissioners and creators.

Our survey analysis demonstrated that the ASA’s recommended minimums are lower than the median rates reported, justifying an increase to concept and storyboard work, roughs, lettering, and comic strips.

The data also showed that the calculation of comics rates can be variable, with some creators being paid per completed page, and others being paid per discrete task, such as lettering or inking. Adding further complexity to the calculations is the differing work required – a page with nine panels will typically require more labour than a page with only three.

A majority of respondents shared that they would prefer to increase their rates, but feel unable to do so in the current Australian comics industry. Meanwhile, foreign markets such as the United States pay significantly more for comics work – another consideration that creators should take into account when negotiating their fees.

These rates represent minimum recommended rates or ranges, irrespective of experience. For those comics creators who may consider themselves less experienced, we encourage you to set your rates within the ASA’s recommended ranges.

The next consultation and update of Comics Rates of Pay will take place in September 2028. As with  all of the ASA’s recommended rates, a WPI increase will be applied each financial year.

Our warm thanks to the creators and industry professionals who contributed to the consultation; your feedback is greatly appreciated.

About the ASA's rates of pay

The ASA publishes recommended rates of pay because we believe fair remuneration is vital. These recommended rates are intended to provide authors and illustrators with authority and confidence in their own negotiations. Read more about the ASA’s recommended rates for comics here.
