Understanding, let alone negotiating, your publishing contract can be daunting for any author or illustrator. The terms you agree to will lock in your rights and future income for years after you’ve signed, so it’s essential that you have a firm grasp of what the different terms, rights, and clauses mean, as well as the implications they could have on your career in the long-term.

The better informed you are about the promises you and your publisher are making in your contract – as well as how to end the legal arrangement if necessary – the better you are able to negotiate for a deal that is fair to you.
