Setting and negotiating fair freelance rates

Fair rates of pay for writers and illustrators make it possible for creators to make a living, but determining what exactly is “fair” and sustainable for your individual circumstances can feel like a minefield. What is a standard or minimum rate of pay for freelance work? What kind of factors need to be taken into consideration when issuing a quote? How do you adjust your rates depending on the offering? And how can you go about confidently negotiating these rates with clients and organisations?

Author, academic, and publishing all-rounder Melanie Saward has gained firsthand experience setting and negotiating rates throughout her career, and she will show you how you can advocate for yourself and earn a sustainable living as a freelancer.

In this highly practical one-hour session, you will learn:

Whether you’re just getting your start as a freelancer and want to make sure you establish yourself sustainably, or you want to ensure the rates you’re already charging align with industry standards, Melanie will equip you with the information you need to bolster your self-advocacy and negotiating power.

There will be time for questions from the audience.
