Join our call for support for Australian authors and stories

Ahead of the federal election, the ASA is joining publishers, librarians, and booksellers in an urgent call for candidates to support Australian books and reading. Fair policies and investment are vital as author earnings fall, AI disrupts our sector, reading rates decline, school libraries are cut, and business costs rise.

Alongside the Australian Publishers AssociationAustralian Library and Information Association, and BookPeople, we’re launching the Books Create Australia 2025 election campaign, urging candidates to invest in the future of our industry, and to back Australian authors and Australian stories.

We invite authors and illustrators to use their voice. Ask local candidates to:

  • Fund Australian authors
  • Ensure AI is fair
  • Back Australian stories and publishers
  • Invest in reading
  • Guarantee support for libraries
  • Grow our local bookshops
  • Sustain our literary life

What you can do

Download the Books Create Australia posters and social tiles to help promote the campaign. Many candidates won’t be aware of the urgent and specific needs of our industry, so it’s vital to spread the word far and wide.

The call to action on AI, in particular, is very timely following the horrifying news of the pirated work of Australian authors being used by Meta for AI training
