AG Dept seeks information from rightsholders

The Attorney-General’s Department is seeking information from stakeholders on how copyright materials are currently being used in Australia as inputs for AI systems, or could potentially be used as such in the future.

To that end, we have been provided with a questionnaire that copyright owners / rightsholders are invited to complete.

Please get in touch with us if you are able to provide examples of how (to your knowledge or belief) your copyright material:

  • has already been used, or
  • is currently being used, or
  • could be used in the future,

in Australia as inputs in the development, deployment and/or operation of AI systems.

The Attorney-General’s Department is not seeking information about uses of copyright material (Australian or otherwise) as AI inputs outside of Australia. For example, the fact that many Australian works were included in the Books3 dataset, is not relevant to this particular questionnaire.

We appreciate that it will be exceptionally difficult for Australian authors to know whether their copyright material has been used as inputs for AI development given the lack of transparency around AI development, the nascent industry in Australia, and the lack of current Australian licensing deals. If, however, you have any insights to share, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch at [email protected] so we can provide you with a questionnaire to complete.
