Undertaking our recent school appearances rates of pay consultation, we were invigorated by both teachers and creators championing the role of artists in the classroom. Some of the most memorable experiences students have at school involve guest appearances from writers or illustrators. Not only do creators bring the curriculum to life, they also showcase an array of creative futures to students.
Paying artists and illustrators fairly is what makes such experiences possible. That’s why the ASA regularly reviews our recommended Rates of Pay, gathering valuable information to guide any necessary changes.
The biggest insight from this consultation is the confusion teachers can sometimes experience when planning to invite an author or illustrator. Teachers are keen to invite authors and illustrators, and to make the argument to their principal or financial decision-maker, however they are uncertain about the various options and requirements like travel and catering.
Writers are enthusiastic about presenting at schools and libraries – but far too often, they arrive for an hour’s paid work only to be expected to stay longer to meet students, sign books, and chat with teachers, without being paid for this additional work.
That’s why the ASA has streamlined the rates to provide clarity for creators and teachers, including: standardising rates for in-person and online events; setting out rates according to class group, whole year, or whole school events; and applying modest increases so that everyone has straightforward tools for invitation, negotiation, and agreement.
Our survey analysis and individual consultations revealed a growing gap between the average and median rates of pay reported, and the minimum Rates of Pay advocated by the ASA. With both inflation and wages growing, we’re now looking at increases that exceed both the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Wage Price Index (WPI). Given the growing disparities – and feedback from educators that the barriers to School Appearance invitations are less about the rates and more about the confusion – this is an appropriate moment to revise the rates more holistically.
Following this consultation, the ASA has identified additional ways to improve clarity for educators seeking to contract authors or illustrators for school appearances, including publishing resources on how to book a creator, and how to choose which rate is suitable for the event. Meeting authors and illustrators is inspirational for school kids. The opportunity to participate in a workshop or presentation, or just a chat in the library, is an experience that stays with students for a lifetime, fondly remembered as a highlight of school days. The ASA plays a vital role in ensuring that these opportunities support creators’ livelihoods so that they can continue this essential work.
The ASA publishes recommended rates of pay because we believe fair remuneration is vital. These recommended rates are intended to provide authors and illustrators with authority and confidence in their own negotiations.
