Many authors choose the non-fiction route to share family stories and tales of their ancestors, penning biographies or histories — but without a significant event or person of interest, achieving broad commercial appeal can be a challenge. Other authors incorporate their research into historical fiction — a genre popular with publishers and readers — but find their loyalty to the source material can hinder imagination. So, how do you take your raw, personal material, craft it into a manuscript, and ensure it will appeal to a wider audience?
Don’t miss this one-hour session with author and screenwriter, Alli Parker, who will share learnings from her experience novelising the true story of her grandmother — Australia’s first Japanese war bride — and dramatised the process of fictionalising family stories in Until the Red Leaves Fall — exploring integrity and truth in historical storytelling — and how Alli turns personal family stories into engrossing historical fiction.
