ASA and AustLit announce a new creative partnership

The ASA and AustLit, the national database of literature and storytelling, are delighted to announce a new creative partnership. From January 2026, we’re pleased to offer ASA members a free subscription to AustLit, providing them with access to the most comprehensive record of our nation’s critical and creative writing. The database has over a million records containing biographical and bibliographical information on Australian and First Nations storytelling, as well as rich datasets, information trails, digital exhibitions, and so much more.

AustLit’s Director, Maggie Nolan, says, ‘I am really excited about this partnership between AustLit and ASA. I have long considered authors to be one of AustLit’s most important stakeholders. This partnership ensures Australian writers can access and contribute to our understanding of the depth and diversity of Australian literary culture.’

ASA CEO, Lucy Hayward, says, ‘We couldn’t be more thrilled to be able to partner with AustLit to offer our members free access to this comprehensive, dynamic archive that covers the breadth of Australian literature and the diversity of Australian storytelling. We know authors at any stage of their career will find AustLit a valuable tool for writing, research, inspiration, and as a record of published work.’

What is AustLit?

AustLit’s mission is to be the definitive bibliography and research environment for Australian literature and storytelling. Their vision is to preserve, champion and discover Australian literary cultures by engaging and building a diverse community of users – especially authors, researchers, educators, librarians, students, publishers, and, of course, readers. Since going online in 2001, AustLit has become the go-to resource for authors, creators, literary critics, and anyone in the writing and publishing industry.

On AustLit, you will find records for over 1 million works and more than 200,000 authors and organisations. These include information on genres, subjects, settings; biographical details; lists of ‘works about’; links to related works and creators; and selected full-text material – helping authors to position their work in our unique literary landscape. AustLit captures and interlinks this bibliographical data to map a rounded ‘Life and Career’ view of authors. AustLit is a resource for all writers and creators, both before and after publication.

How can I get the most out of AustLit as an ASA member?

Once a creative work is published, it becomes part of a vast, dynamic ecosystem of our nation’s storytelling, and AustLit is the conduit, linking works by and about authors, literary prizes, critiques, reviews, and other outputs through shared settings and subjects.
