Navigating Self-Publishing

Self-publishing is booming at the moment. If you want to produce a book you are proud of, there’s a lot to learn and many choices to navigate.

Do you know the differences between traditional, hybrid, vanity, and self-publishing and which path is right for your manuscript? Do you understand how to find the right publishing service provider or freelancers to assist you? Do you know the true cost and amount of time it takes? Or how to get your book into the hands of readers? Would you like some guidance to make the self-publishing process less daunting?

Don’t miss this session with self-publishing consultant, Debbie Lee, to find out what you need to know to successfully self-publish your book..

You will learn :

Session 1: Authors Take Charge

  1. The self-publishing revolution – a big picture overview
  2. Why choose to self-publish – the options, the pros and the cons: traditional publishing, hybrid publishing, vanity publishing and true self-publishing
  3. Working with the professionals (freelancers and/or ‘Author Service Providers’) – self-publishing does not always mean doing it all yourself.
  4. Schedules, budgets, and quotes
  5. Marketing, pre- and post-publication
  6. Distribution – the perennial question.

Session 2: Examples, hot tips and advice from self-published authors across genres (e.g. children’s series, self-help, business, memoir, genre fiction)

  1. Do your research – what else is out there? How does my book complement/compete?
  2. Formats and platforms – paperback, hardback, large print, ebook, audiobook, series
  3. Find your tribe – author networks, writers centres, literary festivals, industry hubs, and book clubs
  4. Advance information, social media, and live presentations – creating a market beyond ‘bookshop land’
  5. The true costs – it takes money, time, and energy in equal measure to optimise success
