Publishing Contracts - Know Your Rights

Understanding – let alone negotiating – your publishing contract can be daunting. The terms you agree to will have an impact on your rights and future income for years after you’ve signed. Do you have a grasp on what territories or subsidiary rights you should grant, and how that might affect your bottom line? Do you know the industry standard royalties, and when you should negotiate for a rising royalty?

The more informed you are, the better prepared you will be to make the most of your publishing contract.

Managing Lawyer and Director of Authors Legal, Victoria Chylek, will share with you:

  • why seeking legal advice on your publishing contract before signing makes good commercial sense for all authors and illustrators
  • your rights as a creator and how to protect them
  • the 10 principles of fair contracts and what they mean for creators
  • red flags – what to watch out for

Join this session so that you have the knowledge to optimise your publishing contract.

This session is suitable for emerging authors and illustrators as well as published authors who want to learn how to secure a better deal on their next contract.
